The person who posted
the message said that it would probably be
better to call and discuss your needs first. He recommended that
you
speak with Kandie Adkinson, administrative specialist, whom he
said was
very good. She was a featured speaker at a genealogical seminar
held by the Eastern
KY Gen. Soc. in Ashland recently.

Tips
1) If you like to do original research,
you can order microfilm copies of many old Whitley Co.
record books (Order Books, Tax Books, Deed Books, Minute
Books) from: Department for Libraries and Archives, 300 Coffee Tree Rd., Frankfort, KY 40602. Write them a letter requesting a list of available films. Films are around $15 each. You can view them at your local library.
|
2)
Films are available for rental at your local Mormon
stake. You can find them in the Yellow Pages under "Churches" |
"Campbell
Co., TN, marriages, 1838-1881",
1984, Byron Sistler. |
(4) There are LOTS of Whitley marriages from about the 1870's until after 1900 that were registered in Scott County TN. I found the marriage of my great grandparents there, even though they were married in Whitley. I can only surmise that there was a circuit riding preacher who dumped his marriage returns whenever and wherever he pleased. About ten or twelve years ago my sister and myself made the trip to Huntsville where they allowed us to go into the vault and examine the books ourselves. The counties of the bride and groom are listed and we were amazed at the number of people not only from Whitley, but also other surrounding KY counties, especially Pulaski and Wayne. Since my gr-grandparents had never been given an original copy of their license, we were able to obtain one at the price of one dollar. Copies were fifty cents, undoubtedly more now. When were realized the number of Whitley marriages, we kept looking and found some for other family members that we had been looking for as well. (Nancy Jonckheere). When I mentioned this to my, born and raised in Whitley, father-in-law, he said that Scott Co. was a favorite place for run-a-way couples from the Whitley area who wanted to get married. 5) Contact your local Genealogy Society to find out what is available in your area. Some researcher donate their books to local libraries for other researchers benefits. Some places have larger freestanding research facilities that are little publicized outside the genealogy world.....(Your local librarian can probably tell you who to contact, or what research facilities are nearby. ) |
6) Before going to the Court House in Williamsburg to do onsite research we suggest you spend a few hours at the local library (located just a couple of blocks from the Court House). As of our last trip (1997), records at the Court House are not indexed. Much time can be saved by using the books at the library to get dates before going to the Court House. The Court House does have early school records but you have to ask about these. Take lots of paper to take notes at the Court House. Copies were priced to prohibit us from getting copies of anything we didn't feel we actually HAD TO HAVE. If you don't have an exact dates don't bother writing the County Clerk's Office for marriage records etc. YOU WON'T GET THEM. |
