Her Name:: Our wonderful Ukkyou's name has a particularly androgynous quality to it, much like Tsubasa and Akira. Her name seems to be a pun on her origin, Kyoto. Another of the more off-beat names, it hold only three real syllables.
U--Right::Kyou--Capital
Pronounced:: oo--`kyoh

Her other name, U-Chan is a slang on her existing name. It's common for children(being informal) to shorten their friend's names and instead of kun or san, they add chan. It's also a play on what she like Ranma to call her, because chan is also a term of affection.

Physically, Ukyou likes to show off that she too can blur that boundry between genders, as she can make herself to appear as a convincing boy or girl. She has feirce green eyes and long darkbrown hair and as near as I can come stands at 5'6".Okay here comes the fun part. Although not nearly extreme enough to be considered Okama(crossdresser), Ukyou has only been seen wearing a dress once(not counting Kimonos). And that wasn't even in the Manga. She usually is either wearing a Boys Highschool uniform or her cooking gi and long hose. If in the highschool uniform, she keeps her chest very tightly bound to prevent any obvious associations with being a girl. If in the GI, she prefers an off shade of Dark Blue, too purple to be called navy. A bandolier draps across her shoulder, with four small spatula mounted in the front, and a huge combat spatula in the back. She also wears a wide white ribbon in her hair most of the time.

Actually, Ukkyou's real beef was with Genma. When Ranma was six, Genma had stopped at Kyoto on his travels. There apparently he got caught trying to steal from a Okonomiyaki Yatai. Afterwards to make up for it, Genma worked for the owner of the cart breifly. He watched his son play with the owner's seven year old daughter, oblivious to the fact that Ranma was oblivious to the fact that Ukyou was a girl. Almost everyday, Ranma would steal an okonomiyaki, and Genma would work it off breifly. Then Ukkyou decided that Ranma would have to go through her to steal from her daddy again.
Needless to say, that didn't last long. After Ranma beat-up, ran-down, or blew past Ukkyou, they would sit down and chit-chat and play around. Ukkyou's father soon asked Genma for an arranged marriage to his son. At first, Genma refused but after eyeing the dowry(which vanished mysteriously) he decided the price was still too high to break his word to Tendo. So he asked Ranma.

"Son, answere your father. Which do you like more. Ukkyou or Okonomiyaki?"

"Uhhhmmmmmm....OKONOMIYAKI!" answered the six year old.

That was all the excuse Genma needed to take off with the Yatai, minus one component. Ukkyou. After that, she was ostricised over her promised ditching her. She began to train to be a chef of the As You Like It School. She decidedly ended her female life then, claiming it gave her nothing but weaknesses. She vowed to make all the Saotomes suffer for her torment.
